Virginia Holiday Duals

2010

My favorite moment of the trip; A coach comes up to me on Sunday morning and asks"Do you mind if I tape a couple of your matches? I run a club and want to show them how you wrestle. You guys wrestle with an "edge" to you." I want my guys to wrestle with that style."

What an awesome weekend we had at the Virginia Holiday Duals. We had 9 dual meets and ended up 6-3. Our guys fought hard and competed extremely well. Here is a summary;

After crushing a few teams our first 3 duals we went up against Pennsylvania. As most of you know, Pennsylvania is thought of as the best wrestling state in the country. We took on the state and almost came out on top. This was our best wrestled dual meet, and had some great match-ups. Two matches that stick out in my mind; Brandon Moen had an extremely good kid who was probably the favorite over Brandon. But, 45 seconds in to the match he was crying because he couldn't stand the constant pressure and aggresiveness. I knew at that point, the match was over. The other match was Christian Bahl who had a great kid as well. Christian stuck to the gameplan and won in dominating fashion. The match came down to the last match, and Pennsylvania ended up beating us by 5.

Our very next match we went up against a good Illinois team. This dual had more "mis-matches" as we dominated in our good weights, and they dominated where they had stars. Our team wrestled well, and fought hard, but unfortunately had 2 matches where we were winning and got put to our back and pinned. We also had 3 matches that we won by 13 or 14 points but couldn't get a pin or tech. Although we won 9 matches to 8, we still lost the dual.

Maryland Terps were up next. This was the only match of the tournament that we didn't have that PINnacle fight. The guys were bigger, stronger, faster, and we didn't give them enough fight to overcome that. Our guys still gave there best effort every match, but not that extra attitude needed to beat the best. I couldn't believe how big some of the wrestlers on that team were.

We came out on top of our next 4 matches. We had a big win over TNT(combination of NJ, PA, OHIO, NY) which was sealed by big Will Rog. Another win over Team Virginia, in which we dominated the action.

Some personal notes: We are very proud of Charlie Webster and Michael Loger, they were the youngest guys and lightest guys at there weight, but they fought hard and although they may have lost more matches in one tournament than they have in there life, we saw no tears. Logan Smith was an animal. We weren't sure how he would do coming in, but he ended up 8-1 with 5 pins and a major. He was extremely aggressive and didn't get his opponents any chance to breath. Curtis LeMair had 9 matches and only 2 of them were decided by more than 2 points. Do you think he got any better ? Except for one 10 second mental lapse, he fought hard against bigger and sometimes older wrestlers. Brady Berge and Christian Bahl wrestled extremely well. Christian had great position throughout the tournament and was never in danger. Brady really didn't have anybody that could stay with him and made people cry(literally) without touching them with his movement and fakes. Brady was also given the opportunity to exhibition Pennsylvania's best wrestler a weight higher than Brady, Spencer Lee, and Brady won 4-3. It was a great match with all of PA and MN teams surrounding the mats. Hopefully we see a rematch at Tulsa. Spencer is an awesome wrestler and a class act. Brandon Moen, a guest on our trip, was great to watch. He was aggresive and dominating and frustrated his opponents with his in your face style.
