A Special Senior Class Highlights MN and WI State Tournaments

By Brandon Paulson, 02/28/16, 8:30PM CST

17 Champs, 28 Finalist, 62 Placers

This Senior Class has always been special. When our wrestling facility opened, and PINnacle started going year round, this class was our first youth elite class. Many of these wrestlers were around the same weight, hence trained together often. The round robins we used to see were amazing, even at the youth level.  I remember bringing in 2 time NCAA Champion Tim Hartung, who normally helped out with our High School group, to help out with our youth.  Half way through the practice he says, "So these guys drill better than the hs guys, pretty cool".  When this group was in 7th grade, and we had our Wednesday practices with a smaller group of 20, Jared says, "These guys are going to be awesome, right?"  The answer is, Yes Jared, these guys are awesome!  To see the growth of these guys as people, and athletes, have been amazing.  I am grateful to be able to spend another 4 months with them training through June/July.  Our first youth elite practice, I told them that I believe there will be an Olympian in this group.  I still believe today.

Final numbers-17 State Champs, 28 finalist, 62 placers, 105 entrants -

So many highlights, unfortunately I can't list every state champ or placer-

  • The boys winning 106-152 in AAA
  • Alex Lloyd's explosive domination in the finals
  • Mitchell McKee snap
  • Hunter Marko winning 4th state title, the most out of senior class.
  • TVenz and Jeske pinning there way through tournament to meet in finals
  • Ryan Sokol and Calvin Germinaro throwing hip-tosses in the blood round to place at state
  • Allar and Bergeland getting to hug Dad at matside
  • Svihel fighting his way to finals
  • Berge trying to hop back to center after breaking leg
  • Kerkvliet blast double to win
  • Tyler Shilson scoring points and wide open style
  • Parriot's 10 second pin(and when he almost pinned himself trying cement mixer earlier in tournament)
  • 132 AAA top 5, great scrambles and matches between them
  • Youth Training partners Molitor/Gliva/Gliva/Jones/Crowe/Robb/Lloyd/Lemair/McKee/Cashman etc. all have success. These guys have wrestled each other thousands of times and continue to get each other better.
  • Thomas Stageberg's 2.5 hour commute, 2 days a week pay off.
  • Christian Bahl winning Oklahoma state! Although he is not in our numbers, he will always be an original member of PINnacle.

The amount of work put in, commitment, and dedication these wrestlers show ,is amazing.  Congrats to all who worked to Be Great!
